How Caribou Lose Their Antlers
WARNING: THIS IS NOT TRUE SO IT'S NOT MY FAULT IF YOU THINK IT IS.
A long long time ago, when the world was still only animals, greedy Caribou was sitting on a rock staring at a poster. The poster said "COME NOW! THE ANNUAL FALL WEIGHLIFTING TOURNAMENT!" Every year, the greedy Caribou participated, and every year, he won.
He never thought about how the other animals felt, and if they wanted to have a chance to win because he was too greedy and selfish. He wanted to win that trophy every single time. Many animals were very frustrated and annoyed and they told Caribou, hoping he would change his ways. Caribou didn't care a single bit. Who cares if they can't win? It's not my fault I'm strong he always thought.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over Caribou. He turned and saw the Wooly Mammoth. "Oh goodness my, I nearly bumped into you!" cried Mammoth. "Sorry, sorry, sorry!" Caribou disliked Mammoth immediately. The mammoth was too nice and he looked strong. Stronger than Caribou.
"Be careful!" Caribou snapped. "Sorry sorry," said Mammoth, "Are you participating in the weightlifting contest?" "Yes, I am. And I plan to win" replied the Caribou. "I am too" cried the mammoth. Abruptly, Caribou walked away thinking. Mammoth is strong, thought Caribou, but not strong enough to defeat me. I was born to win! I don't need to practice at all.
The next day was the weightlifting contest. Caribou slept in and was late. He didn't care a bit. When he got there, there was a huge crowd of animals. He thought it was to cheer for him, but they were cheering for the mammoth. Caribou and the Mammoth defeated other animals until they were against each other.
"I can carry 70 pounds," bragged the caribou. "Okay, let's start with that," said the judge. She gave Caribou and Mammoth each a 70-pound rock. Caribou rushed forward and picked it up. I was so heavy he thought his antlers would break! Next was Mammoth's turn. He slowly but surely picked up the heavy rock with his huge tusks. "Let's do 100 pounds," Mammoth said. The crowd cheered. Mammoth went first. He slowly . . . picked it up! Caribou went next. He also slowly picked it up but halfway, SNAP! Caribou's antlers fell off.
That's why every autumn, caribou lose their antlers because every autumn during the weightlifting contest, they try to attempt the impossible.
